Name a Chicago artist who has remained relevant since 2013, while never selling out and staying close to the streets. It’s not Campaign Sosa, as his output has waned in recent years (although his influence remains grand), it’s the artist known affectionately as Durkio. Lil Durk has released the sequel project to his 2018 mixtape, Just Cause Y’all Waited. Durk is a pillar in Chicago as he, along with Chief Keef, the late Fredo Santana, Lil Reese and G Herbo among many others are responsible for helping to start the Chiraq drill sound.
This is Durk’s first solo project since ‘Love Songs 4 the Streets 2’. Soon after, Lil Durk released the collective project, ‘Family Over Everything’, along with his OTF Crew (Only The Family) . From the end of 2019 until now, Durk has been on fire, consistently showing out on features such as Roddy Ricch’s Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial, Lil Uzi Vert’s LUV vs. The World 2, and on Murda Beatz’s “Banana Split ” with YNW Melly just to name a few.

‘Just Cause Ya’ll Waited 2’ is 15-tracks long and is a breezy 40 minute listen from the first song to the last. Out of the 15 songs there are two official singles. The Young T produced “All Love” & the Deezy produced track “Chiraq Demons” featuring G Herbo. Production credits on the project include 12 Hunna, Tre Gilliam, Keyyz, KidWond3r, and Go Grizzly among others. On the first track, “Different Meaning” Durk lets bars off like Dirk Knowitzi let shots off, while still being able to tell a story. “3 Headed Goat” featuring Lil Baby on the hook, and a verse from fellow Chicago native Polo G is arguably the best song on the entire project. “Gucci Gucci” featuring Gunna, displays Durk rapping a catchy chorus, while Gunna spazzes on his verse. The Chicago rapper reminisces about drugs, love and the “olden days” on “Internet Sensation” which is track 9 on the project.
Lil Durk does not get the credit he deserves when it comes to his storytelling ability. No, he is not the most lyrical rapper, however you can hear the pain in his voice in most of these songs. The melodies displayed on this piece of work is just a reminder why most of these younger artists see Durk as an influence. With Lil Durk releasing his project this week, and Polo G set to release his album titled ‘The Goat’ next week, Chicago rap is still in good hands. Just Cause Y’all Waited 2 is out now on all streaming platforms.
